The Global Strategy to improve Agricultural & Rural Statistics Final Conference was held on November 14-16, 2018 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
In the summer 2018, Global Strategy to improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics (GSARS) and FAO in close collaboration with Joint Research Centre (JRC) and DG REGIO of European Commission (EC) tested the refined categorization of the urban-rural people based definition.
FAO Statistics Division is pleased to announce that the Inter-Agency Expert Group on the Sustainable Development Goals has decided to up-grade its sub-indicator 12.3.1.a Food Loss Index to Tier II at its 8th meeting in November 2018.

The Global Strategy Final Conference will be held on 14-16 November 2018 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Following the endorsement of the Global Steering Committee in October 2017 and the United Nations Statistical Commission in March 2018, a new Task Team, chaired by PARIS21, was established to prepare an Action Plan for the Second Phase of the Global Strategy.
A harmonized definition of rural areas consistent with an urban definition is important for making cross-country comparisons of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and for meeting the associated rural policy objectives.

The Global Strategy, in collaboration with Zambia’s Central Statistical Office (CSO) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), carried out field tests of the guidelines on the quick assessment of grain stocks through value chains, which were developed by the Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) project.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Pacific Community (SPC) collaborated to prepare the Pacific Strategic Plan for Agricultural and Fisheries Statistics (P-SPAFS) for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Pacific region. P-SPAFS is a 10-year plan that aims to guide the development of agricultural, fisheries and rural statistics in Pacific SIDS, which face specific challenges in their statistical systems, and need support to build their capacity to meet the unprecedented data demand for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
