Improving the quality of statistics in Myanmar through the compilation of Food Balance Sheets

The Global Strategy organized a three-day workshop on Supply Utilization Account (SUA) /Food Balance Sheet (FBS) data validation in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar on 27-29 December 2017.

The workshop brought together around 15 participants belonging to the technical working group for the preparation of FBS, including: Central Statistical Organization (CSO), Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Livestock, Fisheries, Health, Nutrition, Food, Trade and resource persons from Global Strategy regional office.

The Myanmar Government accords high priority to the development of the sustainable statistical system in the country and is working closely with the Global Strategy to improve the quality of statistics in the country. The workshop focused on validating the draft national SUA/FBS for 2011-2016 and enhanced the capacity of government officials to produce SUA/FBS in future. The draft was produced by the CSO staff in close collaboration with national stakeholders on the basis of previous trainings provided by the Global Strategy’s regional office. At the end of the workshop, the final FBS for six years was produced.

This was the final technical assistance activity that took place under the Global Strategy for preparing the FBS in Myanmar and serves as an example of successful capacity-building initiatives of the Global Strategy.  The CSO officials are now confident for preparing and validating the SUA/FBS in the future. However, remote assistance will be provided by the Global Strategy’s regional office when required.
